As punishment for causing the death of Balder, he was bound in a cave across three stone slabs. A poisonous snake was fixed securely over Loki's head so that poison dripped onto his face, where he is destined to stay until he breaks free at Ragnarok. His wife - or in some versions, his daughter - is given a bowl or goblet to catch the venom, but when it becomes full she must leave to pour it away and the venom reaches his face. It is said that when this happens, he wrenches away with such force that the whole earth shakes causing an earth quake. At Ragnarok, Loki will break free from his bonds and lead the assult on the gods. He is associated with the day Saturday and his symbol is the snake. His wife is Sigyn. |
