Our Wedding
November 17, 2001
We had been together for over a year before we got married. We choose November 17 because it was his dad's birthday and we hoped that would get him to show up...it did.
I wanted a really nice, really large wedding. My dream wedding. It didn't quite turn out. If it could go wrong it did. The wedding started an hour late, only 5 non-wedding party people showed up, the camcorder battery went dead and what was taken didn't turn out very good, and of course my camera fried, so I only have a handful of pictures.
I wanted a formal wedding, but Jimmy didn't want to wear a tux again. He'd wore one at his first wedding and that was enough, so we compromised. We had a Renaissance themed wedding. I got my beautiful gown and the guys got to play pirates.
The weeks leading up to it were very busy. I made everything myself...even my shoes. I think the hardest part, though, was finding a maid of honour. My first choice was his cousin and she just kinda seemed to disappear. Second choice was my sister-in-law. She was to be it up until two days before the wedding. I'd already made her dress and gave it to her and everything, then because my brother was being a prick she said she couldn't make it and wouldn't give the dress back. The one who finally became my maid of honour was his other cousin's live in girlfriend (now wife) whom I really dislike. I couldn't get anymore matching fabric for her dress, so I had to make do with scraps of another color and it just didn't look as nice as it would have with the first dress I made.
We rented the municipal auditorium and had his uncle perform the ceremony with a reception following. At the last minute we decided to cancel the dinner and rent a limo. I'm really glad we did, because we were planning on over 100 people and only about 15 people total showed up.
The wedding party consisted of my daughter, Desire', as the flower girl, his cousin's step-son, CJ, as the ring bearer, his brother, David, as the best man, and of course Sheila as the maid-of-honour.
Like I said before, I'd invited over 100 people and hardly anyone showed. His family got mad because I wouldn't invite his one cousin whose b**** wife was pregnant and due to drop out any day. Note: I have been trying to have a second child since Dez was a year old. We had been trying for almost a year at this time and pregnant people really upset me (still do). This particular one had a kid every year and all I ever got to hear about when around his family was her. It didn't help matters that I didn't like her anyway. But, like I said, it didn't matter how I felt about things, they weren't coming if she wasn't invited. To be honest, I made it very clear that I didn't want any pregnant people at my wedding, but some still showed up. Sheila even had the nerve to tell me on the way to the ceremony that she thought she was pregnant.
That was his side, though. The sad thing is that there was only one member of my family there, my step-grandma. My brother had started a fight with my grandparents shortly before, so they didn't show up because they didn't want to be there with Jesse. My uncles weren't going without my grandma. My mom wouldn't go without my brothers. And of course, Jesse was being a prick and wouldn't go because I had originally asked him to walk me down the isle like he did at my first wedding and he threw a fit, so I just omitted that role. He then got mad because my youngest brother, Jim, was going to be an usher and he didn't have a role. I told him he could be an usher too, but he wanted a fancier outfit made than I was wearing and I told him he'd have to wear a pirate shirt and be happy. That's what all the men were wearing. That wasn't good enough. Families!
Even though there were problems, it was still a beautiful ceremony. It started with Mendelssohn's Wedding March. The best man and maid of honour entered followed by the ring bearer, flower girl, and finally the bride. There was some sort of bible scripture before the actual wedding ceremony, then we read vows that Jimmy had written.
Jimmy: On this day, by the joy in our souls and the love in our hearts, we are joined. We become one to complete the other, for together our hearts beat as one and are stronger than alone.
April: In your eyes I see my destiny and in your heart I feel forever. The wind whispers your name when we part and makes me think of your smile.
Jimmy: In your touch I feel the fire of your love. It has forged my heart and lifted me over the winter of my life. It has caused hope and peace to return in my eyes.
April: My heart will be bound to yours as our spirits unite and we make our own way. So our journey begins and may our love be forever.
Once we were finished, the officiant (his uncle) read us an Irish blessing:
May you be poor in misfortune Rich in blessings Slow to make enemies And quick to make friends But rich or poor, quick or slow May you know nothing but happiness From this day forward.
We then exchanged rings, kissed, lit the unity candle, and kissed again before walking down the isle as husband and wife to the tune "Irish Tune County Derry".
Afterwards was the reception. I made a beautiful red velvet wedding cake. Since we cancelled the dinner, we simply had cake, punch, and candies along with music and dancing. We shared our first dance together as husband and wife to the Live song, I Want To Dance With You.
