Renewing Our Wedding Vows
March 12, 2006
Married life doesn't always go as planned.
For quite some time Darkholm and I have been not so happily married. We seemed to fight almost endlessly, and over useless things. The first part of March 2006, things really got bad. I found out some stuff that totally turned my world upside down. It was all from before we were married, some from before we even met, but it put so many doubts in my mind about everything. Then to top it off, he'd get mad rather than talk to me which caused us to fight even more. I feared our marriage was over.
After a week of fighting I finally had enough. I took my daughter to my mom's and went to the liquor store. Not exactly the best approach, I know. I gave up drinking as a whole when we met, but had cut down considerably after losing a baby I didn't even know I was pregnant with 5 months before meeting him. Before that, drinking was my answer to everything and I was to that point again. This time, however, I wasn't drinking alone. He decided to have a contest to see who could outdrink who. Well, I matched him shot for shot, and finally he began to open up to me. We talked for 8 hours and when it was over, everything was back to how it should be. We decided to renew our vows, to symbolize this new beginning.
We choose the weekend before the full moon for the ceremony. It had rained for days, but actually cleared up long enough for us to have it outdoors. The ceremony began shortly after midnight in my back yard. A beautiful alter had been arranged with candles and flowers - 5 smaller candles in shades of pink, blue, green, yellow, and cream; a white unity candle with a wreath of daisies and wild flowers around it, a red and a blue candle on either side with crystal candle holders wrapped in wreaths of pink roses, and an arrangement of wheat with a large green tulle bow to symbolize fertillity. Wine goblets were in place for all present.
James and his cousin Kelly waited in the back yard while Kelly's wife, Nicole, helped me get ready. We walked around from the front yard - through the natural archway formed by the shubs and vines at the side of the house. The ceremony was short and simple - no clergy to preform it - just the four of us present. We read vows to one another that James had wrote, mine first...
Blessed by mother Gaia and joined under lighted moon, I give my breath and life to you And as our hearts beat as one Call you to be my lover, Bound as I am to you by joy and hope Joining my hand to yours and walking your path, May the stars eternal be our guide.
Then James...
Blessed by the Greenman and joined under night sky, I give my soul and heart to you I lay my life in your hands and want no other, Bound as I am to you by trust and honor Joining my hand to yours and walking your path, May the stars eternal be our guide.
We once again exchanged rings and lit the unity candle. We then toasted with apple wine, giving just a bit to the spirits as an offering.
